About Me I originally hail from Finland, where I started my aviation career by training as a commercial pilot with Finnair, the national carrier of Finland. I also worked for seven years (1984—1991) as an air traffic controller and an air traffic control (ATC) instructor at Helsinki-Vantaa airport (EFHK). During this time I participated in a number of technical and operational task forces with the Finnish Civil Aviation Administration and the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA). I earned my Bachelor of Science (1992) and Master of Aeronautical Science (1993) degrees from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida. At Embry-Riddle I served as a teaching assistant and developed the ATC curriculum (a four-course minor) for the University, designed and set up the new ATC simulation laboratory, and served as the principal instructor for the two upper-level undergraduate ATC courses. Upon graduation, I worked as a full-time research associate and ATC instructor from 1993—1994 at Embry-Riddle. I also have a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering degree from the Pennsylvania State University (1996), with specialization in human factors/ergonomics engineering. My Ph.D degree is from Penn State as well, in Engineering Psychology (2000). At Penn State, I did research on human visual performance and workload measurement and temporal characteristics of human motor control. Presently I am a U.S. citizen and an assistant professor at the Institute of Aviation of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I teach courses in the graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Human Factors and Master of Science in Human Factors program, as well as in the undergraduate Aviation Human Factors program. My research interests lie in the areas of human factors in aviation systems, human performance measurement and modeling, mental workload, decision making, and human error and reliability. My primary research focus is on the role of time and temporal mental models in human performance.
